As part of our topic of Dragons, Castles knights and Fairy Tales, Class 2 visited Bolsover Castle for the day. We spent the morning exploring the Little Castle, where the Cavendish Family lived about 400 years ago.
We looked at the paintings representing the 5 senses in the Pillar Parlour, working out the meanings of the Latin titles. After that we looked at the different shapes on the beautiful ceiling in the Star Chamber.
We thought about the jobs of different people in the castle and how the lords and ladies lived compared to the servants. In the kitchens we thought about how difficult it would be to cook in the fireplace and wash in the scullery without electricity.
We also found out about the importance of Horses at Bolsover Castle and the sorts of clothes worn by the Cavaliers.
We were accompanied on our trip by a representative of English Heritage, who said how brilliantly behaved the children were and how much she had enjoyed seeing how they learned about life at Bolsover. The staff in the shop also said the children were 'a pleasure' to have there. Well done, Class 2, for being such wonderful ambassadors for Southwold!
